TIMING CHAIN REPLACEMENT

bruce, it is not always necessary to have the special tools for some jobs. it is helpful but not
always needed. if it is a camshaft holding tool and by the sound of your note, it would be to keep the cam from moving backward in the engine and knocking out the rear plug.
this can be avoided by not banging on the cam gear with a hammer. gears can be test fit without the chain to make sure they fit.
you can turn the engine by hand if need be without doing any harm. by hand your not
turning fast enough to bend valves.
if your car has not jumped time you can take it apart then line it up, before you even remove
the chain and gears.
