I have been reading up on the A604 a bit, especially since I'm gonna have to dive into a rebuild (or something!) this spring (assuming the car still goes forword through then!). This site: http://www.atraonline.com/html/gears/sep99/28-a604.html brings up a very interesting bit about the overheating due to the cooler- dark fluid (which can also be charracteristic of old fluid- due to being used and breaking down....) indecating overheating from the cooler getting clogged. Is the cooler they pictured the same as ours? It seems that the simple solution would be to grab a large atf to air radiiator/cooler and an inline filter and just stop using the oem filter. Would give more atf capasity, plus would cool better. I know my A604's fluid is quite dark, despite changes, etc. Most of the times I've had bad problems with shifting (excluding reverse after my fun snow day- but that's a different problem from my forward gear problems) has been after I've been driving long enough for the fluid to be hot, or on hot days, or on really really really cold days (i.e. -20 degrees). Perhaps then I cooked everything a bit too much? Certainly makes sense. Older fluid plus lots of heat and a weak tranny = destruction! BTW- anyone know what the actual A604 gear ratios are from year to year? I'm thinking an A604 with a good gear ratio, extra big cooler and external filter, better soleniod pack and valve body (from different year), flashable TCM and extended pan w/drain plug would give me more power and stability, no? __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
