58 AFB Carb

Denis,

Sorry to hear of your carburetor troubles.  May I assume your existing one has been declared dead?  You may want to get a second opinion.  Mine was declared dead and I've been using it, rebuilt, for two years now.  Mine was a so-called structural defect in one of the mounting tabs, so our circumstances are probably different.

BUY THE ONE ON E-BAY !!!!   It took me months to find a correct spare.  Around one hundred phone calls and e-mails combined.  Don't let this one get away.  The unique thing about this model is the smaller than usual "throat" which is only something like 4 1/4 inches in diameter - don't quote me - as opposed to the more standard five.  There is a so-called replacement available but it is designed to fit a number of applications and its throat size is the standard five inches.  You will need an adapter, a kind of funnel, to make it work with the air cleaner.

Even if the one available needs to be rebuilt, which it probably will, it will give you more options.  It may allow your shop to combine the two to make one functioning carb.  I confess I have no idea what it that goes wrong with a carb for it to be declared beyond saving.  Probably an overall deterioration of the many small apertures involved in it doing what it does.

Doug from Florida says he has acquired a replacement carburetor that does have the same throat dimensions.  It is somewhat larger in its other dimensions, which may or may not be a problem.  Hopefully, he will contribute some more concrete answers, particularly part number and availability.

Good luck,

Hugh

Hugh, Good to see your car up and running. Had my 58 Vert in the shop for some carb work, but tell me I need a new or rebuilt one. Any ideas where such an animal can be had? One on eBay right now, but no idea of how good or bad it is? Even questioned the seller and says he doesn't know either. Pays your money and takes your chances! Denny, Redwood City, Ca.
