Seeing that your Imp is a 60s-70s model, have you considered checking the ammeter gauge? If the gauge is bad, the alternator won't charge no matter what you do. A quick check is to unhook the cables from the gauge, bolt them together with a small bolt and tape them very good because all the power of the charging system goes thru this wire. Sometimes the gauge will appear to still function fine, it just won't let enough current thru for the battery to charge. Keep a volt meter on the battery so you can check before and after to see if there is any difference in voltage output once you remove the original alternator gauge from the circuit. This can be a problem on most any Chrysler product of the 60s thru 70s. If the gauge is bad, you can find a replacement at most any of the suppliers that are mentioned here on the list or in the mopar magazaines, or you can just replace it with an aftermarket gauge which hangs under the dash. The last suggestion isn't very elegant though, and only suggested as a temporary measure on Imperials ; ) Phil <>< ----- Original Message ----- From: "johan C wildhagen" <johancwildhagen@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <mailing-list@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, January 29, 2003 10:22 AM Subject: IML: Hunting shorts > O.K. man Iv had it with my 65 charging system . > I ran the battery down last week (lights) and suddenly I cant keep a charge > in the battery. > > Iv replaced the limiter (one year old) > Iv replaced the alternator twice (and up'd the amperes to 45) > Iv replaced battery (1 1/2 year old) > Iv driven it about 20 miles to recharge it (no help) > > the lights dim (although slightly) when the fan is blowing and I come to a > stop. > > The windows slow to a crawl or stop when I activate them up or down while > driving (and don't work at all when engine off). > > > NOTE: > I get a slight voltage reading when I hook a meter to the positive side of > the battery and negative to ground. > This is with the ignition off and all the fuses pulled. > > > Id like to do a little sleuthing my self before I take it to a specialist. > any suggestions please? > > > > Johan > 65 LeBaron > Washington DC > > _________________________________________________________________ > Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8.
