Sounds like either a bad battery or maybe an electrical "leak". Maybe something like a hood light or trunk light staying on? When you say the charge wouldn't hold for very many hours, do you mean while running, or while sitting. If it is while running then change the regulator(they are cheap and easy to replace). If its while sitting then your problem has nothing to do with the charging system. What year Imp is this? I missed the original post.
