Just
out of curiosity, does anyone out there that has a straight 8 have any
more-than-occasional starting problems, especially when hot?

I have a 50 Chrysler New Yorker Club Coupe. with the same straight 8 as used in the Imperial models.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I have never had to convert to 12 volt.  This straight 8 will start right up and still has the original wiring except for the battery cables, and still uses only the mechanical fuel  pump.  Which brings up another point regarding these cars.  They don't need electric fuel pumps.  Just like the 6 volt systems all the cars had mechanical pumps, and the only problem I have seen currently is due to this crappy gas.  And that's generally only in the real hot weather.  I know some of my friends feel "safer" on cruises having an electric fuel pump backup, but I've never been stuck without it and that's taking 500 to 1000 mile trips.........................................Bill B.
