Hello. I have been so quiet of late, haven't I? Well, I think so, even if you don't! I have been driving the 58 Imperial on a daily basis now for over a month, waiting for the return of the poor old '92 Chrysler, which is long overdue but fascinating for the continuing quality of the excuses being offered. Driving the Imperial everyday has robbed much of the charm from driving it as a weekend toy, and its foibles are just something I to take into account now automatically. I was stopped by the police last night because the rear plate illuminator was not working. As it is a black plate with white letters, a 1958 plate, the cop was asking more out of curiosity than ticket writing, I think. I have never bothered to check out something as mundane as the plate illuminator before. (In fact, this is the first bulb I shall have had to replace since getting the car in 1994.) I am delighted to report that the light fitting is quite unique and a thing of beauty in and of itself. It is recessed into the bumper to the point of being invisible except from below. I have never seen such a fitting on any car before. I confess I don't know how to change the bulb yet. But its good to know that attention to design details extended even here. Hugh PS. The cop did not give me a ticket. We had a friendly chat for a minute or two and I said I would get right on it.
