Push Button Drive light - '61

Hi John,

Your '61 uses a flat Electroluminescent panel to illuminate your pushbuttons.
The panel is mounted vertically inside the heater/AC pushbutton "stalk". This
panel transfers the soft green glow to the clear pushbuttons from behind the
dash.

If the EL panel shorts out, none of the instrument cluster, pushbuttons or
radio dial will light up. If only the heater/AC buttons do not work, you either
have a bad panel (not likely) or a bad connection to the panel (not getting any
AC current from the power pack).

All EL wires behind the dash will be WHITE WIRES WITH RED CONNECTORS. If you
find one hanging i.e. disconnected, that's most likely the culprit.

Beware of these white wires if you have the panel lights on. If you touch one
of them near a connector or EL panel, THEY WILL SHOCK YOU SOMETHING FIERCE!!

I believe that there are only 6 incandecent light bulbs in the entire dash for
'61 through '63 Imperials. Starting from left to right...

  1) Left-turn signal indicator
    2) Parking brake warning light (cluster)
      3) High-beam indicator (cluster)
        4) Right-turn signal indicator
          5) Map light
            6) Glove box light

Hope this helps you track down the problem.

Imperial regards,

Jay Mc Kee
