Ahh, the discussion about thermostats is getting heated. (pun intended) The whole issue still boils down to the cooling systems ability to remove heat from the engine. The most import item for doing that is the radiator (heat exchanger). If it can't transfer the heat into the atmosphere, all the other cheap attempts are futile. Yes I said cheap. By nature we all want to take the cheapest route to solving a problem. But if the radiator is not up to the task of removing all the heat your engine can generate in the worst driving conditions, then it needs to be replaced or repaired. There's a reason the radiator is the most expensive part of the cooling system, it does the most work. For me, life is too short to spend it standing on the side of the road with steam pouring out from under the hood. My .03 (inflation) The price of gas around here is over $2.50/gallon now.
