Hi Tom,You can verify if the timing is working or not if you have a timing light with an advance setting. I disconnect the small wire that comes out of the front of the transducer on the right side of the carburetor. With the engine running you can change the timing by pulling the wire out of the transducer towards the rear of the car. The timing change should happen pretty quickly and is quite sensitive. Another thing to check is that there is a single wire lead coming from the harness on the Lean Burn computer that sometimes doesn't get reconnected after the air cleaner has been off. This will prevent proper operation also. I've had the most trouble with these at the grounding switch where the stop screw contacts the grounded terminal. I've had good results on the stubborn ones grinding the set screw to a sharper point on the end.

It really doesn't have any thing to do with the fuel system sochance of it causing any idle roughness or stumble is remote. It is used toelectronically control the timing which allows a leaner fuel mixture thusbetter mileage. The number of control boxes I've replaced I can count on one finger as they don't go bad all that often. I've had pretty good results by running the carb a little richer to eliminate stumble and rough running. The fuel available today isn't any where close to what was back in the 70's. Inthe center of the metering rod hanger is a set screw which if you turnclockwise will raise the rods out of the jets giving a richer mixture. Don't get carried away, usually 1 to 2 turns is plenty. Also make sure when you'resetting the base timing, make sure to ground the stop on the carb transducer.
