I've had at least one pushbutton Imperial around since 1969 & I've always shifted from drive to reverse or reverse to drive. I have a feeling that either the neutral or reverse buttons are loose or seated incorrectly on the shift forks & are binding when you push neutral first.

    Remove the bezel surrounding the buttons & gently remove it so you don't knock the rest of the buttons off the forks. Have a look to see what's going on in there. If the buttons sit very loose in the forks, use a small pair of needle nose pliers & GENTLY squeeze the forks a little bit so the buttons are snug. Keep in mind that its important to put the buttons back in the correct fork.

Imperialists,

As I recall, If I am in drive and I push reverse when the engine is hot, the same problem happens, the reverse button pushes in, the drive button stays in, and the transmission stays in drive.  I never shift directly from Drive to Reverse, I shift into Neutral first.  I read an article in Hemmings Classic Car that where the owner of a Chrysler with a push button transmission said that you should always shift into Neutral before shifting from Drive to Reverse.  Does anyone know if this is necessary or not?

Also, which side of the torsion bar does the exhaust pipe go? From the FSM, it looks like the exhaust should be between the frame and the torsion bar.  Right now my exhaust is on the other side of the torsion bar, real close to the transmission and shifter cable.
