IML: 69 LeBaron back seat question

I pulled the back seat from my 69 Lebaron 2 door on the weekend. There is a very nice metal grill in the middle of the back seat with an Imperial emblem. On my car the grill appeared to be covered on the back by what looked like three strips of black masking tape. This tape was loose and pretty ratty so I removed it. Is this the original covering for the back of the grill. Has anyone replaced this tape with something better and/or more durable and if so what?

Also, my car appears to have only one rear speaker on the driver's I did not see a speaker wire for the other side. Does any one know if this was original or if the passenger side speaker was removed at some point?
