In fact, those new and brighter colors for the 50's were the result of new chemistry! Before then, there really weren't any bright colors that were UV-stable to last in sunlight and weather, suitable for car finishes. Technology and fashion are closely linked (think nylons in the 40's, polyester in the 70's, body-color soft bumpers on current model cars)! Those with an interest might enjoy a book called 'Mauve', about the development of the first aniline dye and the textile and chemical industries it spawned.
