According to the Hollander’s manual, the 57 was the first use of the modern co-axial power steering system, so your 56 would have the older style.
No parts will interchange, if this is so.
Depending on the date of production, your car will have either the “early” 1558263 box (same as 55) or the “late” 1675149 box. Both are shared with DeSoto for the same year. I don’t know the changeover date from early to late, but your parts book should give you the VIN of the first changed vehicle.

Imperialists,
I have traced an ongoing leak finally to a seal at my box on my 1956 Imperial Sedan. I can purchase a Lower Steering Box Seal Kit/Pitman Shaft Seal however the parts house can only confirm this kit to go back to the 1957 Imperial. My question therefore is, is this kit compatible for both of those years, or was there a change in technology between the model years preventing me from use of the '57 offering?
