Re: IML: Imperial incident (stuck float)

I have owned my '65 Imperial since 1974. The Fuel Gauge has never read above 3/4 of a tank. I haven't tried to fix it. Two years ago it stoppped working all together. It may be stuck, or something else may be wrong. The trouble is that having it read empty activates the Sentry Signal. I would rather not have it on all the time. Although I don't know for sure, I think the sending unit can be serviced though an access hole in the trunk floor. It will be a while, though, before I get to it as I am still waiting to obtain the rest of the emergency brake cable that I need in order to repair the damage done during an attempted adjustment by an overzealous mechanic. Once the emergency brake is functional, I will get busy with other things on the car.

What's with these simple mechanical devices? My 64 convertible did/does the same. Fill it up and the gauge would only go to 3/4, sometimes slightly above. Checked the gauge, it is fine. Paid $225 for a new sending unit from a Chrysler parts guy In Temecula (the sending unit was specific for Imperial), put it in and - same thing - no difference.

Started reading about grounding the gas tank - the tank was nicely painted as well as the straps - so, I ran a ground wire from the frame to the sending unit tang that sticks out next to the fuel line.

Bang! Same thing - won't show full. Now what? Actually, it doesn't really matter anymore. The car sucks up the gasoline so quickly, that it would never be on the full mark for more than ten minutes, anyway.
