RE: IML: a/c in 57 imperial

Ken, even though you have 12 volts there, it's possible you may not have
enough AMPS there due to high resistance in a switch or a wire someplace
before you get to the clutch. Be sure and look for any bad connections or
things that could cause high resistance. You would still see 12 volts.

Volts is like the "pressure" in your garden hose. No matter how much you
turn it on, the pressure from the city remains the same. However, you can
limit the amount of "water flow" ("amps" in an electrical circuit) by
"resistance" (how far you crack open the faucet). If you crack it open only
a tiny bit but hold your hand over the end of the hose, you will eventually
have as much "pressure" (volts) as the city is supplying you, but you still
will not have much flow (amps).

So it takes both volts and amps to make the clutch kick in.

Ken:
The A/C clutch on these earlier cars is a bit different from most. The
clutch coil is the rotating member and has a pair of brushes for power
and ground. The brushes can stick or wear. They can be made out of the
appropriate size power tool brushes. The clutch plate pulls off by
removing the center bolt then using a fine thread bolt in the center to
push it off the shaft. The coil and bearing can then be removed to
inspect the brushes and slip rings. Test for continuity between the slip
rings not to ground.
