Piano Wire!
Go to a piano repair shop with a sample of your old wire. Should cost
you about one dollar.
Be happy.

You may be able to get your shifter cable from Imperial Services at

mounts, transmission shift and park cables and speedometer cables
for most Imperials. I ordered parts from them for my 1962 Crown and
found them very helpful and the product high quality.
