RE: IML: Further on the Unleaded gas effects discussion of last month

I had a 66 Newport 383 that had the 516 heads with the 1.60" exhaust valves. I rebuilt the heads and replaced the exhaust valves with 1.74" valves and hardened seats. This improved the reliability and performance considerably. I would strongly recommend this modification to those with 1967 and earlier heads.

Dick,

Those nice clean and shiny heads look great. Did you happen to get a few
shots just as you removed them to show the damage? If so, those would be
great to see as well.

A couple of people asked about valve seat modifications to combat valve
recession. Here are a couple of pictures of the heads for my 68 after
inserting the hardened valve seats in the exhaust valves. All the valves
are new and shiny here, so the seats are a little hard to see, but if you
look closely at the exhaust valves (the smaller valves), you'll see a bright
ring around them; these are the inserts.

I apologize for the black paint - I promise I will paint them the right
color before I install them!
