IML: 55 Imperial Convertible --- New Yorker or Imperial bodied



To clear up (or maybe make more confusing) the matter, the account I read (Mopar Action feb 06 ppg 42-47) states that they started with the 126"-wheelbase New Yorker Deluxe chassis ---- also using the New Yorker's folding top mechanism (rather than design a one-off top) as a bolt-on.
This is also verified (sort of) by the Standard Catalog of Chrysler 1924-1990 --- under the listing for New Yorker Deluxe series production totals (where they list how many were built per body ... 4dr/2dr/wag/conv/whatever body style there may be) there is a listing for 1 chassis

This can also be found for the '41 Thunderbolts and '41 Newport Parade Pheatons -- 3 LWB Royal and 9 Saratoga chassis.

As they say 'New Yorker chassis' and 'New Yorker top as a bolt-on' but no mention of the body I think it's safe to assume that they modified an Imperial body to fit the New Yorker parts.

As for the body, keep in mind that the body bolts onto the frame on these
cars, and that the Chrysler, DeSoto and Imperial share a lot of components
in the 1955-56 design, unlike 1957 and later Imperials. Even the dash is the
same. So changing out the body, especially the front fenders and such, is no
big deal. The major custom work on this car's body was adapting the rear
quarters to the New Yorker it began life as.

And it probably also looks stretched because of the rear-mounted spare tire.

To have seen all three Parade Phaetons and this car up close and in person
in my lifetime makes me feel like a lucky Imperialist!
