IML: Chrysler Imperial History

The Imperial name may have been conjured up W.P. Chrysler, but I have no 
definitive evidence. Chrysler was forming a corporation in the model of 
Billy Durant's GM where Chrysler himself worked. Chrysler was a great 
business man and he realized that in the future only corporations would 
survive the looming prize wars. This was Durant's prophecy. Chrysler wisely 
bought the holdings and name of the late Dodge brothers who had a reputation 
for building great cars. He conjured  Plymouth, not after the pilgrims' 
colony as many think, but after Plymouth Twine which was a favorite with 
farmers. Chrysler actually marketed the Plymouth towards farmers. Shows how 
different America was at the time. He conjured up the DeSoto whom he named 
after the Spanish explorer and one of W.P.C.'s favorite historical 
characters. Unlike Ford, Walter chose his name to represent the top of the 
line cars in his young corporation. Chrysler's line up was ready to compete 
with GM, Ford, and the independents. The Imperial was never successfully 
detached from the Chrysler name in the public's mind, despite all of the 
marketing. The same thing happened when Packard tried to make the Clipper a 
separate marque. To this day, people still call them Packard Clippers and 
Chrysler Imperials. Happy Imperialing folks.
