John: I had a simalr experience about 200 miles after my full restoration on my TR4. Same symptoms- 1st felt it was in the rear carb-maybe a bad jet flooding. But it turned out that the brand new Mallory distributor (dual point) had 1/2 blown a condensor- so the timing was 'irractic'. I replaced the condensor- and all was well- Then 2 months later I was on the highway and it started the same missing. The missing went away on aceleration- and I said- Hmnn- When i am accelerating, i am advancing the timing- and the problem goes away. I pulled over, popped the cap and looked carefully. this was a brisk October AM, and I discovered the condensor was 'just touching the 'cold' dist case. I moved the condensor about 1MM- and have nevr had the problem again. If you are running an electronic ignition- check the wires for 'a short to ground'. On my Jag -V-12, the elecyronic pickup wires come out and were held to the V Valley by a band clamp. I had detailed up the V, and reclamped the wires- The car wouldn' start-just 'pop'. Before my detailing-it ran purfectly. SO I looked at what i did- I had pinched the wires- causing a short to ground. I wrappd the wires in elec tape, then re secured- no problems the past 3 years-- Just a couple things you might check! sherman D.
