Re: IML: bumper chrome?

Darrell and All,

I've seen a lot of replated bumpers in the shows and car events I've been to over the years.  There is a local replater here in town who does an ok job on bumpers but does not offer triple plating.  He replates them with copper as the base and than a thin layer of chrome over that.  I did some research as well as asked the owners of cars whose bumpers really looked good.  What I learned was the nickel plating (the middle step) was very important in getting the brilliant 'new' chrome look.  Also it is essential for each layer of plating to be highly polished before the next layer is applied.  You stated you paid $850 for both bumpers to be replated.  If my memory serves me correctly, I paid about that for just the rear bumper and tail light housings from my '66 Eldo to be triple plated.  They are brilliant and have held up fine.  They were replated about 3 or 4 years ago.  No hazing, no pitting, just a deep brilliant shine and the chrome is bright.  Almost blinds you in the sun!  I'd be taking those bumpers back to that company and letting them know you aren't happy with what they provided you!

Subject: IML: bumper chrome?

I just got my bumpers back from chroming and im not as happy as I should be, they are an improvement, but not as nice as others , first off they have a nice shine or should I saw gloss to them, more like a new nickel, not what I would consider to be chrome. I spent $850 for both front and rear bumpers on my 59 imperial, what should I do, send them back or just live with it?
