Re: IML: 62 Brake Problem

I might add that it is unbelievable how this adjustment will affect brake pedal height.
I re adjusted the brakes on my 60 Custom this spring with great results!

I agree with this post that you should check the adjustment first. His instructions are correct. Another way of saying the same thig follows.

This adjustment applies to 1956 through 1962. Both adjusting cams (one upper and one lower) on each front wheel should be turned towards the front of the car until tight, then back off so that wheels spin almost freely. A small amount of "shoe drag" is okay.

For the rears, the cams are on the top end of the backing plates. Turn the front most one toward the front and the rear most one towards the rear on both sides until they are tight, then back off until you can move wheels by hand. You will feel the axle gears working so they won't turn freely like the fronts. Make sure that the emergency brake is off.

Most normal shops have no clue about this adjustment. Imperial owners should know how to adjust their own brakes, or have a shop that is familiar w/ Imperials.

The first thing I would check is to be sure they are adjusted properly. This
can be a bit tricky if you haven't done it before on a 60-62. All
adjusters, with the exception of the rear most ones on the rear wheels
tighten in the direction of the wheel forward rotation. the rear most ones
on the rear wheels tighten opposite the forward rotation. There are
illustrations of this procedure in the service manual.

Did they release properly before work was done?

Subject: IML: 62 Brake Problem

Hello list- I am looking for some help with my brakes for my 62 Crown
Coupe. The brakes just don't want to release all the way. The car has all
new parts- including a re-built booster. Does anyone know what the proper
length should be for the booster rod that extends into the master
cylinder? I believe that this may be the problem. The manual states to
bring the booster in to the dealer for adjustment. Any thoughts? Thank
you.
