They claimed that the first torqueflites ( which they erroneously had as an option in all five 56 Chrysler Corp makes ) had a first gear start.

True ! TheTqf (from a standing pont) always starts in 1 then shifts in 2.
Even if you put the trans in 2, the car starts in 1.
