IML: 1959 Generator Field vs Armature Post (How to Tell?)

Hello all-

I removed the wiring harness in my 1959 Imperial Custom in order to reduce the 
wiring to the minimum necessary to run the car. (It had a fire before I owned 
it - the harness was quite crisp.) That was a success, but I want to hook up 
the generator again, and do not know which post is field and which is 
armature. How can I make this determination? With the car running, they both 
show a positive voltage. I'd look at my other Imperial but I stole its less 
toasted regulator!
