Re: IML: Coupe Door Sag

Chris;
The driver's door on my 54' Imperial Newport also has this problem,
mainly because the extra weight wears out the hinges faster. I can't see how
shimming would help if there is play in the hinges, I have tried adjusting
the hinges every which way on my car and I can't get it to work any better.
Just like a house door a car door has to hang plumb, meaning the gaps on the
hinge and jamb side have to be parallel, or the edges will stick in the
jambs. There also isn't an awful lot of room for adjustment, on the 54' I
adjusted out the sag but then the door would hit the opening and jamb at the
top corner and wouldn't latch.
The only solution that I can figure is to find a better set of hinges or
rebuild the old ones. I do not know if it is possible to rebush and replace
the pins in a Keller era door hinge. I haven't investigated it yet but I
believe that the Chryslers of the same year used the same hinges, it's worth
trying as I know where a junk 54' NYR is. Look on the bright side,
Camaro/Firebird owners have the same problem but more often as they are
cheaply made.

Subject: IML: Coupe Door Sag

The driver's door on my '66 Coupe is sagging and I want to fix it. I have
checked the FSM and it seems pretty straightforward, but wanted to ask other
coupe owners if they had any experiences they wanted to share. I'd like to
try shimming versus hinge or hinge pin replacement, at least at first.

Anyone got anything to share?
