I have been there and I have wasted more money than I care to mention, before you buy any parts , always check all ground wires and connections as most old cars tend to loose ground and not always but mostly the cause of electrical problems. I would start by cleaning all area's that may look suspisious, and pull back on the wire covering to look at the condition of the wire jacket, as some wire shorts will cause the wire to heat up and disfigure, after doing all this if you still have trouble than start the car and pull the ground battery cable off the battery while the car is running to see if it will stay running, if it dies then have the generator and regulator checked, most autoparts store's can test them for free . also as you may not know parts for these cars are very hard to find. because these cars are not a muscle car or a sports car, and now one has invested the time or energy to reproduce replacement parts for our IMPERIALS and it's sad but maybe when the right person with the money and the passion to start manufacturing parts.,

 look around the clubs home page and you may find some info about parts and where you can buy them,, also you can call around you'r town and ask if anyone rebuilds the parts you need. I hope this helps..

thanks to those who gave a few suggestions about starting our troublesome 58, i forgot to mention that the battery was a new one but not nesessarily  fully charged, 

no one answered my other question as to whether parts are still available  should there be a serious fault ;   starter ,  solenoid  etc .
