Member Posts: 49 | I pulled a front and rear wheel and removed the drum on my 1959 Dodge Coronet. I was expecting it to be easy to identify but I'm just not positive. I think it's the 3 platform type brakes but wanted to confirm with the experts here. I'm also curious where the best place is to buy brake shoes. These are about the thinnest shoes I've ever seen. Thanks!! Veteran Posts: 100 | If you are unable to find time to take your brakes apart, please post a photo of your data plate. It should feature the approximate building date of your car. I believe the switchover to the 3 platform variety was early in the 1959 calendar year. Will check and post it when I get a chance. I am hoping your setup is a 3 platform one. I want to use your photos as a guide for my mechanic to compare to when he starts working on my car later this month. Here is a video on the new 3 platform brake for everyone's reference - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJ6fQHpqgps

Veteran Posts: 100 | Per attached, late in December 1958 was the cutoff point. It also gives you other visual clues to differentiate between the two types. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/printer-friendly.asp?tid=6...

Veteran Posts: 100 | Is it possible that he has pre 3 platform brake shoes on the front and new 3 platform brake shoes on the rear? The only reason I am asking is that within the technical video I thought they made it a point to note that the circular hole in the brake shoe of the standard brakes (pre 3 platform) had been eliminated. Maybe I have had too many hotdogs and the beverages that go with them over the last few days and my vision is not what it used to be, but it looks like there is a hole in each body of the brake shoe s on the front wheel.

The best way to determine 3PF brakes is by the center support. These are 3PF brakes, front and rear. No question about it. Ron

Member Posts: 49 | I looked at the cowl tag and under the "date' it says 0429 so I imagine that is April 29, 1958. So I'm assuming that means the 3 platform shoes. I will try to find time to take the front shoes off and get a picture of the center support. Thanks again for all the help and the manual/videos that was great.

Expert Posts: 4110 Location: Connecticut | April 29, 1959. Not 1958. Not just shoes. Wheel cylinders and springs as well. Ron

Member Posts: 49 | Took the brake shoes off (see pictures). Considering the build date of April 29, 1959 and the pictures, I would assume these are the later 3 platform brakes. Does anyone believe they are not? Please let me know. Thanks. Expert Posts: 4110 Location: Connecticut | Just curious why you have so much grease on the spindle ? As long as your bearings are packed, you're good to go. OTOH, if some of that grease makes it onto your shoes or drum, it will be bad. Seriously. Ron

Member Posts: 49 | Thanks. So I do definitely have the 3 platform brakes. I need to order the parts now. As for the grease, the car had sat for 48 years I just did a quick clean and grease to move the car around. It has no engine and the brake pads are shot so I did not pay much attention to the amount. Will be more careful when I actually rebuild the brakes. Thanks for all the help.
