I have a dash mounted rear view mirror but the ball is a little loose and can't tighten up. The decorative nut is frozen and in order to take it off and fix it I will destroy the nut. I'm looking for any poarts I can find to replace it if I get it off.

There's a special tool for that decorative nut.  I'll get a picture of mine.  Then there's a plastic washer and a metal washer.  I think you are better off trying to find the tool than destroying the nut.

Location: So. Cal		Yes, get the right tool. If you can't find one for sale or you don't want to buy it, you can get away with wrapping the nut with a multiple layers of cloth, and wrenching it with some channel locks. The cloth will protect it to a large degree to prevent it from getting destroyed.

If you still have the plastic bushing in there, put a small washer under the plastic bushing. If it still isn't tight, you can wrap the ball with 1 or 2 layers of electrical tape to get it to grip well. But you must have the plastic bushing to hope to get it tight.

Good info. Where would I look for a for a 58 Plymouth dash mirror tool? Sounds pretty darn rare. It must be made like a line wrench only with a bunch of blades

I think the tool is the same for all dash-mounted mirrors from 1957 at least through 1959, Imperial, Chrysler, De Soto, Dodge, and Plymouth.  I bought mine on eBay several years ago.  It seems like they would come up for sale or auction every now and then.  The tool is about five inches long.  The head has a conical cross section and has the four channels or notches to fit the decorative nut precisely.  The gap is just wide enough to slip by the mirror's support peg at the top, where the peg is thinnest.

That tool woluld have been great but non existent in google searches. I ended up using the rag and pliers method. Didn't destroy the nut too bad. Cleaned everything up, lubed the threads on the nut and added a little washer under the nylon ball socket to tighten it up and it worked great. Painted it and ready to re-install in a couple days. Thanks everyone for the tips!
