Expert 5K+ Posts: 7530 Location: northern germany | Would a single 4bbl carbureted 383 1960 Dodge be graced by a D500 emblem, or just the ram version? Also, I seem to remember, that in 1960 the 383 single 4bbl Dodge received Holley carburetors and the 361 the usual Carter AFB. Is that correct?

Veteran Posts: 181 Location: christchurch New Zealand | The Holley carb was a one year only ,1960 on the 383 Polara only, of course it shared a 1 year only air cleaner because of the larger neck size on the Holley. I cant confirm the D500 option as ram car only ? there are 1960 D500 Polara owners on this link that no doubt can. Geoff

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7530 Location: northern germany | Thanks, sorry, should have specified, I meant Dart, if that makes a difference. Yes, that 60 Dodge Holley had a weird feature, one year only. Something about idle adjustment iirc, but I forgot what it was.

Veteran Posts: 181 Location: christchurch New Zealand | Pretty sure Holley was Polara only. Dart and all others got AFB 4bbl carb. Holley for that year only , has the idle control [ slotted screw ] is underneath the air cleaner stud in the carb. Geoff

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10277 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . I thought I could find a definitive answer by checking the 1960 Dodge brochures and the 1960 Mopar parts book. I found answers but I would say nothing definitive, but maybe confusing. For example, I find evidence of both a 361 Ram-Induction and a 383 Ram-Induction D500 engines. ??? As for single Holley 4 bbl carbs on 383s in 1960, I found evidence of two different ones, i.e. an R1971A and an R2052A. (???) Both of those are Holley 4160 family. I had to Google 4160 and found this https://www.holley.com/blog/post/holley_four-barrel_4150_and_4160_ca... I am dropping the info below and running for shelter. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7530 Location: northern germany | Thanks. That makes sense. Since the 4bbl 383 was the standard engine for the Polara and very, very few carried the D500 emblem. Weird Chrysler model/sales strategy. The more prestigeous Desoto Adventurers got a 2 bbl 383 as standard. Makes no sense at all

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7530 Location: northern germany | Dave, yes, like for Plymouth, both 361 and 383 Ram versions were available. But Sales brochures often provide misleading, incorrect information.

But Sales brochures often provide misleading, incorrect information. Sorry, I had to consult my copy of Willem Weertman's Chrysler Engine book to believe that both Dodge and Plymouth had 361 and 383 versions of the long cross-ram engines available in 1960. (see below) And then there were the Desoto 383 and the Chrysler 413 versions. I better quit. My head is starting to hurt (again). (You were obviously correct. Sorry I doubted you ) See below: Edited by 56D500boy 2024-02-05 4:53 PM (1960MoparLongRamEngineStories.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1960MoparLongRamEngineStories.jpg (384KB - 69 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7211 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | D-500 was Ram induction only in 1960, on Dart, Matador and Polara, 361 and 383 versions. ( 361 and 383 were available on Dart, 383 only on US built Polara). As a Side note, the Canadian Polara came with a 361 instead of a 383, and D-500 was not available on the Canadian models. HOWEVER, if they were equipped with a four barrel, they did not get that awful Holley carb, they came with a Carter AFB. I had a Canadian built Polara for many years bought in 1974, 361-4 barrel AFB. I sold it in 1995 to a friend who still owns it. Edited by imopar380 2024-02-05 9:40 PM
