It has been a beautiful few days in the Denver area recently.  I always look for opportunities to drive the De Soto in each month of the year.  I took it out yesterday and it ran fine.  I took it out to meet a friend for lunch today.  Ran fine again.  I stopped to fill it with fuel - when I went to restart it, the starter spun even when the engine caught.  Shut it off right away, but the starter continued to spin.  I popped the hood and the negative terminal on the battery was smoking while the starter was spinning.  I shut off the battery.  Anytime I reconnected the battery, the starter would spin (ignition switch in the "off" position).  The battery then quit or wore down.  I had it towed home.  I think I will replace the starter relay and recharge the battery.  We'll see what happens.

Hopefully I didn't screw up the starter motor or the flywheel!

Time will tell.

Based on what you are telling us, I believe that your starter-mounted solenoid switch seized up in the "ON" position.

I *think* that the PN for the solenoid is 1770 717. They are out there for about US$100 for after market. More for NOS

Alternate numbers: 1889799 [supercedes to 1658985, 1752369 & 1770717]

That said, a weak mechanical portion of the ignition switch that doesn't spring the return of the electric portion back from START to RUN when the key is released will leave the starter solenoid energized
and the small starter gear engaged with the flywheel ring gear, potentially with disastrous results. (over spinning the starter after the engine has started)

It was strange that the battery ran down so quickly.  It is a fairly new battery, so I was surprised when it just ran down.  No interior lights, nothing.

Unlikely the switch but to rule it out, run a wire from plus to the solenoid wire or the solenoid directly (disconected from the relay on the inner fender). This will also show, if the relay is the culprit (possible but unlikely). Make sure you can disconnect the power line quickly, in case its the solenoid or the overrunning clutch.

good that you caught it in time. I have seen a starter after this happened and the owner didn't realize what was happening so he revved the engine.
The starter literally exploded internally, the armature was in hundreds of pieces.
