Member Posts: 7 | I found a 1956 Dodge Coronet on a property I bought. I brought it home, and am planning next steps. I am not totally sure where to begin, but I thought posting the VIN and asking for some decoding guidance was as good a place as any. Can anybody help me understand what 35156616 means? Thanks! If you post up a picture of the body tag, there is a lot more information that can be had from that. Agree. The first Detroit built 56 Dodge V8 cars had VINs starting with 34, 972, 001 and the last one was 35,167,854. So 35156616 is closer to the end of the run than the beginning. To tell you more, we will need to see a photo of the cowl data tag the is on the right upper side of the car's firewall. Not everything is still legible, but I think it says this: DODGE DIV BDY PNT TRM 0727 16 040 812 41 531 A little gentle brushing with a brass bristle brush will improve the appearance if you want to try another photo. I am still plotting next steps, but if I give this car a go, I anticipate being back on this forum again Based on your signature photo, enlarged below, your car was repainted to white and metallic blue after it left the factory (over the iridescent charcoal - which might still show up on the firewall). I presume that the car sank into the ground based on your photo. You will likely have no floors left (rusted away). That can be fixed (at a cost). However, I would be very concerned about the frame. It might be badly rusted to the point of structural failure. Good luck. There are a few of us on here with 56 Dodges that will be able to help you (as in point you in the right direction) Paint code review: You can see the 41 code but not white and metallic blue codes. I have not put her up in the air to get a good look at the underside yet, but the frame may have just held on. So far it passes the "can I jab a screw driver through it" test. Thanks for the help! Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10182 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Arlington (?): Your photo sizes are fine at 800 x 600 (could even be 1024 x 768) but the issue is they are .jpegs from an Apple product. I can open them one by one but that is a bit of a pain. Much easier if you can convert them to .jpg at either 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768 and THEN up load. If you do that, they will automatically load into your post and be visible to everyone. This is what your photos would look like if you did that. (NOTE: From what I can see your engine is a 270 2 bbl poly and should have an engine number by the oil filler tube at the front of the engine, something like D61-123456. Note: The grey on your car's firewall will be the Code 41 Iridescent Charcoal that originally covered the entire car before it was painted white and metallic blue. (This is not a 55-56-57 Chevy where you can buy a complete one piece floor pan. This is an older Mopar. Member Posts: 7 | Thanks for all the tips. The engine stamp appears to read D63I-87124. I have found quite a bit a iridescent charcoal as I have peeled back some layers. I also found what I suspect to the original upholstery. I have the car up on my lift and it can just sit there for a bit while I plot next steps. There is a good chance that I may part ways with it sooner rather than later. If I do decide to pull the cord, let me know if anybody out there knows somebody in search of a parts car (or whatever this car might be useful for). Based on this photo, I think you are done or need to look for another 56 Dodge with better frame and floor pans. That cross-member rot looks fatal to me. Some folks have used 1991-96 Dodge Dakota truck chassis to eliminate the frame and engine problems. (You will still have to deal with the floor pan). Edited by 56D500boy 2023-03-20 5:30 PM | ||
