I know how to remove fine scratches from stainless steel trim (wet sanding with 1000-1500-2000-2500 grit and then polishing). However, I don't know what to do with chromed pot metal with fine scratches.

First of all, I am happy with the case-in-point 56 Dodge wiper pivots that I bought off eBay last week (and received yesterday). They are nice and unpitted as was shown in the eBay photos. So thanks to the seller Bruce at CT Classic Car Parts. (They have more than just Mopar parts) I would buy from them again.

All that said (and the infomercial over), while they are smooth, they have some fine scratches.

I know I could have them rechromed but they are actually too nice (and I already have enough $ in them). The one with the working pivot arm is much less scratched than the one with the broken pivot arm (I know how to fix the problem)

So far, I've tried AutoSol which did clean them up nicely but it did not remove the fine scratches.

Any hints?

When a seller states "will probably buff out" - it won't.

The chrome is really a thin layer and scratches is normally to deep to buff out.

You could try potato flour that can remove polishing roses on stainless steel

I have no idea about potato flour (or where to buy some).

But I will try.

I tried WENOL polish this afternoon on the worst piece. No improvement.

Lots of YouTube videos showing scratch removal. You can't really "remove" the scratches but you can mitigate their appearance.

You can actually remove the scratches by sanding away the chrome and copper completely. Then you polish the potmetal surface until it shines again.
Of course it is not chrome but it will be surprisingly beautiful. And the shine is not disappearing anywhere. Imo it takes years before it shows any
dullness. This of course suits better on pieces that are easy to sand by sanding belts. It is dirty and unpleasant but I have done it with several parts.

Thanks for that link Marc. Not that I will use that particular shop but I have a whole new respect for quality work (not like the crap that my local guy does)(I think he skips a few steps)
