Location: Auckland, New Zealand. | Last Friday while I was stepping into my Fury I noticed a drip of something on the rubber mat below the steering column. I removed that sheet metal cover around the steering column and could see a drip of fluid hanging off of the end of the rubber pushrod boot into the back of the master cylinder.
I removed the master cylinder and took it apart. Man what a mess! While the bore is stainless sleeved, the master cylinder reservoir itself is cast iron, and rusts like crazy once the brake fluid "goes off" and attracts moisture, creating a rusty sludge in the bottom of the reservoir.
I cleaned it out and put the best components of a spare master cylinder rebuild kit that I had here into it, repainted it in a fresh coat of cast iron grey paint, and put it back in.
How often do you all swap out your brake fluid?
Does anyone have a source for a nos brake master cylinder rebuild kit or two? I'd like to have one on the shelf for next time this happens.

Location: So. Cal | How often you need to change the fluid depends heavily on how humid it is where you store the car. New Zealand being an island, I imagine is much more humid than the inland deserts of California, for instance. If it's really a problem, you could swap to DOT5 silicone brake fluid.
Rock auto used to carry rebuild kits, but I don't see them on there now. Just new masters. Mobilparts might have some. |

| Thank you for the shout out, Powerflite.....
The current world of very Chineseum brake parts can't be bothered packaging Master Cylinder Kits --- it is not worth their while --- no money to be made there --- Good night.....
I may have those Master Cylinder Kits --- I still have 2000 Master Cylinder Kits --- and am happy to have them.... I am away at a show these 5 1/2 days....
FURY/ Glenn is probably the guy who messaged me about these kits --- and I told him that I would check this upcoming week.....

Location: Palm Beach County Florida | I have been using silicone brake fluid for 40 years in my two Dodges, both with the Lockheed style brakes. No leaks, no rust and it will not ruin your paint if you spill a drop or two on the master cylinder housing. |

Location: So. Cal | Silicone fluid won't ruin your paint, but it will ruin your primer. Trying to get it off before you paint is non-trivial. |
