Extreme Veteran Posts: 377 | Hey folks. OK me been wondering something. Since my '60 fury is no longer a push button and will be a floor shifter 4 speed how can I hook up back up light? The shifter doesn't have anywhere to put a switch in.

Seems strange that the transmission doesn't have somewhere to install a reverse light. Unless you're using a top loader 4 spd, there should be linkage on the driver's side of the transmission and (hopefully) a unique position of the linkage when you put the transmission in reverse. At that point, you could make a bracket for a plunger-type switch to complete a circuit that energizes the back-up lights.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 377 | Thanks D. Well this car and from I remember years ago when I did have running, kinda, never back then worried about back up lights. But to that one of the back up lenses housings still has a rubber plug in where a bulb would go. I honestly don't think it ever had back up lights. The harness for the tail lights don't have a pig tail going to any other lens other than the license plate bulb. This isn't the first one I own like that. My '79 Lil Red has a dome light lens, but nothing to put a bulb in. The harness was never ran up to it. I'm wondering if it would be better to put a plunge switch in at that trany or on the clutch pedal.

Back up lights were options on the lower level cars, e.g. Coronets, at least in 1955 and 1956, so it is always possible that cars/trucks that you buy might no have back-up lights. If you put a plugger switch on the clutch pedal, the back-up lights will come on everytime you shift. You don't want that. Either find the port on the 4 spd manual transmission for a reverse light switch *OR* put the plugger near the linkage in a position that is only activated when you shift the transmission into reverse. At worst, you could end up with the reverse lights coming on in two positions, like I did when I installed the reverse switch in the reverse servo test port on my A-466 cast iron Torqueflite. It comes on when I shift to Reverse (good) *BUT* it also comes on when I shift to "1" (bad). The worst case is I put the trans in "1" at a stop light in anticipation of an "acceleration test" against the car beside me. IF there was also a car behind me, they might be a bit concerned to see the reverse light come on while we all wait for the green. Extreme Veteran Posts: 377 | Chizer thank you. I checked my trans and yep there is a plug or something in that spot. I has a little stud sticking out and like a nut down deeper. Gonna have to get it where I can take a closer look rather than it sitting on the ground. At any rate I got my shifter rod issue fixed. 1 thing at time.
