Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Having difficulty re installing the shift cable for the powerflite. I’m trying to go by the shop manual but it’s a bit vague. The cable goes thru the trans housing into a “tube” (cannot remember the nomenclature been a long day) and it’s held into position with a spring clip. Having difficulty getting the spring into the correct position to where it holds the cable into the case. Any thoughts are appreciated. Having difficulty getting the spring into the correct position to where it holds the cable into the case. The spring clip is used to hold the tip of the shifter cable to the shifter "comb" inside the transmission. The cable is held to the transmission case by an "L" shaped bracket and a bolt. The adjustment of the cable in/out is based on the elongated slot in the upper end of that bracket. Don't forget that you need a 3/8" O-ring on the cable at the transmission end in order to keep the fluid from leaking out. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | NYFDX - 2020-09-25 8:29 AM Can’t figure out how to get the spring clip to hold the tip of the cable inside the trans to the shifter comb Not sure if this will help you or not: When I was investigating the early Torqueflite vs Powerflite shifter boxes and how they moved the shifter cable with each push of their respective buttons, I learned that for the Powerflite boxes, the Reverse button pulls the cable back the most. This means that the shifter comb is twisted back towards the point where the cable enters the casing the most. In contrast, the Low button pushes the cable out towards the transmission (and shifter comb) the most. So having the shifter comb in the R position and the cable in the L position provides the greatest likelihood that the tip of the cable will engage the comb mechanism and the locking spring. REFERENCE (with photos): http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70947&... So that helps (in my mind) to explain why the 56 Chrysler Factory Service Manual, in regard to installing the Powerflite shifter cable, says: "b. Installing Cable Push in Low (L) push button. The transmission manual valve lever should be in Reverse (R) position—if not so positioned, move neutral switch contact part of lever (full travel) towards rear of car manually, by using screw driver (or other suitable tool) in neutral starting switch hole. With Low (L) push button held tightly in (full travel), insert cable assembly into transmission case engaging cable ferrule groove with lock spring in cable adapter. Push and pull the cable, using light pressure, to be sure groove in cable ferrule has engaged lock spring. Replace adjustable mounting bracket and tighten cap screw finger tight." Expert 5K+ Posts: 9904 Location: Lower Mainland BC | NYFDX - 2020-09-25 12:03 PM However I think I need a new retaining clip anyone have a part number for it? Why yes I do! 1673 184 and Len Dawson has one at his website (*BUT* I think that you could find a similar workable spring clips elsewhere, maybe even HomeDepot or Lowes or McMaster-Carr or Auveco) UPDATES: 1. 1673 184 was also used in the early Torqueflites 2. Using the technique that I suggested previously for finding things in the Auveco parts catalogue, I found what looks to be the right type of clip on page 193 (see below) REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74648&... 3. Unless the spring really looks like this: Edited by 56D500boy 2020-09-25 11:09 PM (PowerFliteCableSpringClipLocationIndentifier.jpg) (PowerFliteCableSpringClipPN1673184.jpg) (PowerFliteCableSpringClipPN1673184_AtLenDawsonsWebsite.jpg) (Potential1673184EquivalentAtAuveco.jpg) Attachments ---------------- PowerFliteCableSpringClipLocationIndentifier.jpg (158KB - 200 downloads) PowerFliteCableSpringClipPN1673184.jpg (179KB - 194 downloads) PowerFliteCableSpringClipPN1673184_AtLenDawsonsWebsite.jpg (121KB - 199 downloads) Potential1673184EquivalentAtAuveco.jpg (157KB - 202 downloads)

Obviously the diagram that I posted above that shows a clip in the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalogue was done with the first Generation clip. The second generation equally obviously (now) is quite different. I couldn't find Pat Blais directly but I did find one on eBay just now: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Torqueflite-SHIFT-PARK-Cable-Adapters-SPRIN...

Regular Posts: 62 Location: NY | Well I ordered a new spring and it’s the correct part but unfortunately it still does not work. When I get the cable into the shifter comb the spring does not hold it into the comb securely, it is easily pulled out. So any other suggestions are appreciated. I’m thinking of trying to find a new cable, maybe that’s the issue.
