Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10168 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . In my seemingly never-ending pursuit of information about 1956 LA-built Dodge Cowl data tag interpretation, I heard a rumour that the 55 and maybe 56 LA Dodge IBM cards and maybe the cowl tags were related to the 55 and maybe 56 Detroit Plymouth IBM cards (maybe). On that basis, I contacted Mike Petersen (the author of the pretty much definitive compilation of 1955 Dodge info, the "1955 Dodge - by the Numbers" book). Mike was gracious and generous enough to share with me some (or all?) of the 55 Plymouth dealer invoices that he had. As I went through those invoices, I was noticing the body/model codes for the 55 Plymouths in question. Last night before nodding off, I went through those invoices and marked down the 14 different body/model codes that were there. This AM, I checked a 55 Plymouth brochure for the models that were supposed to be available (20) so I am a little short of a few numbers. I am starting this thread to see if somebody, like Terry (71charger_fan) with his 2dr 6 cylinder Plaza suburban, can add some of the missing data. There is a pattern to the codes so I have guessed on a few. These are high lit in yellow and subject to being changed in the face of hard data. I am also confused about a few, e.g. I have a code for a 55 Plaza Sport Coupe ("26") but that doesn't show in the brochure line up. Anyway, please chime in if you have any new data or think that I've made a mistake. TIA (Thanks in Advance) Edited by 56D500boy 2020-07-30 9:04 PM (55PlymouthBodyCodesScreenShot_Rev0.jpg) (55PlymouthCompleteLine.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 55PlymouthBodyCodesScreenShot_Rev0.jpg (41KB - 417 downloads) 55PlymouthCompleteLine.jpg (132KB - 432 downloads)

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10168 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Thanks Igor and Robert. I am going to start a separate thread on 56 Plymouths. I'm not liking the 55 two-digit codes. Many of them don't jive with the info that I got off the invoice copies. Also Not sure about the three digit 56 Plymouth codes. I only have on 56 Plymouth body tag for a Belvedere and its BT (body code is 866). See below. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9862 Location: So. Cal | I don't know what the 8 in front of the 2 digit code stands for. Maybe that is V8? But my V8 '56 Savoy 2dr sedan has body code 854. So the last two digits match up.

Expert Posts: 2012 | . Some correction / guessing to New England Region Price List: Non-coded exterior trim package for ’55 Plaza model (front fender and door side trim for $15.05) probably should has code 442 – by analogy with ’56 Plymouth code 422 that included same items…

Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 10168 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Igor: Not sure where you got the body/model code numbers that you posted above but based on the logical progression that I found on the invoices for 55 Plymouth four door sedans, i.e. 15 = Plaza 6 4dr Sedan, 25 = Plaza 8 4dr sedan, 35 = Savoy 6 4dr sedan, 45 = Savoy 8 4dr sedan, 55 = Belvedere 6 4dr sedan and 65 = Belvedere 8 4dr sedan, I propose the following for the 1955 Plymouths: Plaza L6 11 = 2door Business Sedan 14 = 2door Sedan 15 = 4door Sedan 17 = Deluxe Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P Plaza V8 21 = 2door Business Sedan 24 = 2door Sedan 25 = 4door Sedan 27 = Deluxe Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P Savoy L6 34 = 2door Sedan 35 = 4door Sedan 36 = 2door Hardtop 37 = Custom Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P 38 = Custom Suburban 4door Station Wagon, 6P Savoy V8 44 = 2door Sedan 45 = 4door Sedan 46 = 2door Hardtop 47 = Custom Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P 48 = Custom Suburban 4door Station Wagon, 6P Belvedere L6 54 = 2door Sedan 55 = 4door Sedan 56 = 2door Hardtop 58 = Sport Suburban 4door Station Wagon, 6P 59 = 4door Hardtop (not in 55?) Belvedere V8 63 = Convertible (only with V8 engine) 64 = 2door Sedan 65 = 4door Sedan 66 = 2door Hardtop 68 = Sport Suburban 4door Station Wagon, 6P 69 = 4door Hardtop (not in 55?)

Veteran Posts: 150 Location: Mandurah, Western Australia | According to Jim Benjaminson's definitive book Plymouth 1946-1959, for the 1955 body number, he first three digits indicate the body style, independent of engine size. His numbers are 300 - Plaza 4d 302 - Plaza Club Sedan N/A - Plaza Business Coupe N/A - Plaza 2d Suburban N/A - Plaza 4d Suburban 110 - Savoy 4d 112 - Savoy Club Sedan 100 - Belvedere 4d 102 - Belvedere Club Sedan 103 - Belvedere 2d Hardtop 104 - Belvedere Convertible 106 - Belvedere 4d Suburban My 55 Belvedere 4d Suburban does start with 106 so have no reason to disbelieve data The body number is on a tag mounted on the firewall, engine side. It has body number and plant of origin only. The 56 number system is similar but number order is different, Plaza numbers are 100+, Savoy 200+, Belvedere 300+, Fury 404 He says 58-59 not documented and 59 used a 2 digit code Edited by westaus29 2020-08-07 8:49 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9862 Location: So. Cal | The numbers from Jim's book seem to correspond well with what I have seen on the body tags. Here are two '55 Plymouth body tags, and both agree with what was written. Both are built in Detroit.
