Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | Imperials and some (all?) Chryslers came with the N-start button. I never understood why they did that. FYI, the OEM key switch in the dash is also different when the car has N-start. It is missing the terminal to energize the starter solenoid when turning the key to 'Start.'

My '56 Imperial is started with the key only. It should be noted that the eBay 57 Desoto shifter in question does not have the starter switch at the back of the shifter box despite what the Neutral button says. Phil Courant from France is probably the expert on this one. Not only did it involve a switch behind the Neutral button, there was also a vacuum switch on the back of the intake manifold that opened the circuit if the engine was running. Phil has suggested that "N" starting push button was used on the 57-58 Torqueflites (except Plymouth). However, I only see the 1739 173 shifter box with reverse and starting switches applying to the 57-58 Dodges and Chryslers (??) http://www.ch300imp.com/tqf-sw.htm#sw Neutral Safety Switch info (Including the Neutral starter button): http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69708&... 57 Chrysler Brochure shows it (scroll to the right) but the 59 Chrysler brochure does not. Example TF Shifter box *WITH* neutral starting switch below the 59 Chrysler info: Edited by 56D500boy 2019-08-20 12:16 PM (TFShifterBoxWithNeutralStarterSwitchAtBack.jpg) Attachments ---------------- TFShifterBoxWithNeutralStarterSwitchAtBack.jpg (88KB - 220 downloads)

Chrysler button on a DeSoto controller??? That is a good guess. The 1739 173 Torqueflite shifter box with reverse and starter switches were for the 57-58 Dodges and Chryslers but NOT the 57-58 Desotos (which is weird). The 1739 173s have the tang at the end of the neutral slide to push on the start switch but the Desoto box on eBay does not. Extreme Veteran Posts: 341 Location: Wisconsin | I always found it odd that the Dodge, which was below DeSoto in the market, and the Chrysler, which was above DeSoto in the market, had this feature but DeSoto did not. Especially considering the similar pushbutton arrangement with the Chrysler.

That could make sense *BUT* it is not backed-up by the info in the Parts Catalogue. Besides, it might be more likely that a Firesweep got a 2 spd Powerflite and not the 3 spd Torqueflite, like this one: Even with a Torqueflite as in this one, I don't see the "START" on the Neutral N button: Edited by 56D500boy 2019-08-20 8:54 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9911 Location: Lower Mainland BC | macedon - 2019-08-20 7:53 PM Imperial had the Neutral button start, but in stealth mode. Just the letter N. Hmm... I think that the Neutral/Start button for a 1957-58 Chrysler was a 1739 172. The 57-58 Dodge Neutral button was 1734 241 The 57-58 Desoto Neutral button was 1731 128 The 57-58 Imperial Neutral Button was 1734 233 I did find the Neutral Start Safety vacuum switch as 1770 093 as it applies to both the 1957-58 Dodges and 1957-58 Chryslers.
