| Got a 413 I'm trying to start, car last ran maybe 10-15 years ago. Motor turns over by hand fine. When I turn the key, nothing happens but I hear 1 click, like the starter switch is coming on? Starter switch fried? I changed the ignition switch, the old one was broken. Wipers, interior lights, some other electrical items work. Battery is good, battery cables new. (but not the cable from starter switch to starter) I'm thinking it could be the neutral starter switch but reading the thread posted a few below, that seems like it would be rare. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks

Location: Suwanee, GA | May be your starter switch or wiring to it. I recently had a similar problem with by 62. Got same click when turning the key - different type click than a low battery. Turns out the connector on, I think a brown wire, at the starter switch broke. This occurred after replacing my front suspension. It was fairly brittle, and I'm sure it was due to reaching in from up top several times to access upper control arm adjusting bolts/nuts during alignment.
Have a helper measure voltage across the switch while key is turned to start position. Not familiar with NSS location to know how easy it is to temporarily bypass.

Location: Alaska | I would test and/or replace the starter solenoid. The click you hear is most likely the solenoid trying to work which would mean the neutral switch and ignition switch are working. If it checks out OK then it is probably the starter. |

Location: NorCal | What year 413? Does it have a starter relay like in the pic below?
The click you're hearing could be either the starter relay or the solenoid on the starter. If the relay is clicking but not energizing the starter, use a screwdriver blade to jumper the two threaded terminals on the relay.

| Thanks guys. Yeah it didn't sound like a battery click, and it was just a single "click" when the ignition switch was turned. It's a 63, it does have a starter switch like that one. |
