Why do people persist in adding really wide white walls on cars that never had them? Sure a 1961 had white walls, but NOT that wide. They were narrower, like this:

Because personal preference and taste overrides historical accuracy. People are going to do what they want to their cars for better or worse. I'm guilty of that at times, though usually the changes I like are functional rather than cosmetic.

Also, does anyone notice Chrysler's false advertising in their brochures? That Newport has a long wheelbase front end!

I see no problem in this. The style fits the fin era, as does the car (even though fins were passé in '61). The tires are the most replaceable of items, so if a buyer wants to follow a precision of originality, it is an easy "fix".

Chrysler was 100% correct with the thinner whitewalls. they look way better on the car.

yes, those ultra wide whitewalls look out of place on a late 50s car. i like the look of the oe tires.

I agree with the whitewalls being overly wide, they just hit me the wrong way> However that's an easy fix.

Here's a few shots of the original whitewall spare out of my 61 NYer showing the width.
