Expert 5K+ Posts: 9882 Location: So. Cal | I could use some advice for installing newly painted fenders without scratching all the paint on the doors, jambs, & inner fenders. It is tricky to put the fenders on because they interleave with the inner fenders at the front, and go over the top of them at the same time. In the meantime, the bottom part is flailing around and must eventually lock into place around the rocker. How do you accomplish all this without scratching everything up?

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | If I was doing it, I would assemble (loosely) the entire front clip and install it as a unit. That is rad yoke, front cross bar, inner and outer fenders. You will need 3 people. I have done this numerous times on 57/58 Dodges and Chryslers. Remove it the same way. Cut a bunch of washers to horseshoe shape for slide in shims and get the panel alignment decent. When you install the hood most things will change. I have done cases that looked hopeless initially but a few hours of adjustments and it will be OK. I kept some chest size exposed X- Ray film to tape to painted surfaces to protect from sharp edges but lots of luck trying to find that stuff today! I used it because you could see through it to check clearances. Especially useful when bolting bumpers to a freshly painted body by yourself! Greg

Elite Veteran Posts: 1176 Location: D-70199 Heslach | Nathan,- it's definitely a two man (or more) job! First install the inner fenders, but don't fasten the screws. The radiator support should be fixed with the other inner fender doesn't matter if is correct or not. The radiator support is aligned by its rubber mount. Second install the outer fender with 4 eyes and four hand. Slide in the fender from the front between Inner fender and radiator support. Next to the doors it comes really narrow, and the second pair of eyes has to be very careful. Only fasten the outer fender with one screw to radiator support, and another whose located next to the hinge Third is the other side. Fourth is align the fenders along the hood (I mounted the hood before the outer fenders) The tape or some other prevention next to the door and along the pillar corner is recommended
