Veteran Posts: 125 Location: Tasmania, Australia | Hi All, Recently I asked for some parts in the Wanted section of this forum and I got a reply from a member called "birds", we exchanged a few emails between us on what I was after and we came to a deal. It all seemed quite legitimate at first until I started to become a bit wary of a couple of things, particularly his wording in the emails, he had a gmail address which I am always wary of to, and he called me John once which was his name he was calling himself. I was so close to paying through Western Union as he said his Paypal was having issues but just didn't in the end. The next day he sent me an email asking when I was going to forward money to him so he could ship parts. At first he gave me his wifes details which were: Virginia Moore, 3303 E Linden St, Caldwell, ID 83605, yesterday he sent another email asking me to send money to his wife with the name of Patricia Moore of the same address, two different first names. That address is actually a rural supplies store. So in the end I was close to being scammed, but luckily I didn't send any funds, as living in Australia it would have been very hard to get my money back. He calls himself John Rutherford and claims to have a great repution and in the business for over 25 years, the email he uses is autobace@gmail.com He was only a new user on the forum this month so admin you might want to delete his membership, he is a fraud. Thanks you everyone and I hope this heeds as a warning to be very careful when dealing over the internet. Cheers Peter.

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | I had a wanted ad here as well as one on each of the 300 club web sites. I got several e-mails from people saying they had what I needed. What made me suspicious is that they would ask what parts I needed, but each had copied the text of the ad to their message. I replied to a couple of them and asked for pictures and details of the parts. One sent me a few pictures including ones that weren't of parts I needed, I was able to find a couple of the pictures on peoples web sites or in ebay pictures. Another sent me a picture of a car he was parting out but it turned out to be a car discussed in a forum as a car being restored. I found that telling them that I knew someone in their area that could come pick up the parts and pay for them, they stopped communicating. Both of them gave US addresses and also didn't want to use PayPal.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | get a phone number and call it, make sure it matches the area code. You can also verify addresses in the US. You can look up their residence and ownership by county. You can look up their house on Zillow also which will link you directly to the government info on the residence which will show who owns it. It should match.

Expert Posts: 2490 Location: Kansas City, KS | Western Union is the biggest red flag. This is the choice of scammers. Once the money is sent, there's no way to get it back. You don't even need ID to receive money. If you see Western Union mentioned, stop communicating immediately!

Expert Posts: 2633 Location: Minor Hill, TN | These Nigerians have nothing better to do than to scam people of their hard earned money. I even got an email telling me a relative of mine was killed in a car accident in the UK I was like yeah right and deleted it I even got a call from a 202 area code the caller said he was from the US Treasury. I replied you a da*n lie and hung up I also blocked the # from calling my cell.

New User Posts: 1 Location: Marathon, TX | I was contacted by a guy named Micheal Kaziska. That's how he spelled it. Said he had an engine I'd advertised I wanted. Send the money to his wife, he says. Scam. I almost got taken, but found the pics on another website as a rebuild project. Be careful out there. They work harder stealing other people's money than they would with a real job.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | that 300C site is full of scammers, they must have caught a few fish there. I would expect older guys who don't know the internet probably got suckered. A guy in Nigeria, if he can get 100$ its like hitting the lottery.
