Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | Hey Guys, My Napa parts guy told me today about a new style 12 V battery that uses coils and sealed in fluid, instead of the lead plates and acid. Guess they've been around awhile. Anyone have any 1st hand experience with these batteries. Would like some other opinions before I lay out $160 for one. Thanks, Jerry

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8444 Location: Perth Australia | Wow, $160 for a spiral battery I use one in my work ute (2006 falcon 6cyl) and havnt had a problem, mind you, I also use it to jump start kenworth trucks, so it gets some abuse. The reason for the wow, pretty sure from memory, the one I got (which would be the same ish size as what you need) cost about $400 here

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | I went with the more expensive AGM battery in my boat because they hold up better under vibrations and my boat takes a beating but i have no reason to switch to any "newer style" battery that cost more and will do the same thing as far as my car is concerned. If you don't use your car often some of the newer ones do not hold up well in storage unless they are kept fully charged. Older "Flooded" style batteries handle storage much better. Both contain lead although the AGMs use less. They should have a longer life but I usually don't take a battery to the end anyway. There definately are some advantages to the newer batteries but as long as they remain expensive, for me, it does not out weigh the "old style" battery that I have used all my life. Again, if you take your car out only occationally, check and be sure on how well these newer batteries hold up in storage before you buy. You possibly might find out that they don't last as long? The one thing I do like is when it comes to lifting my battery in and out of my boat, the newer styles are lighter and that weighs in with me more as i get older.

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | I have some experience with these batteries. Many claims are made about how they are better than older style but IMHO the main advantage is they are sealed which you can get in other styles (AGM, etc) One big disadvantage is you do not want to let them get fully discharged because they can be difficult to recharge. They actually make a special charger for these, I believe it is a pulse type. You can use a regular charger as long as they are not fully discharged but there is a trick you can use on them, just connect a standard battery in parallel with them and the charger to bring them back. My personal opinion, not sure they are worth the price for our use.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 537 Location: Upstate NY | We use optima batteries building new vehicles an they require a substantial long time charge to get any life. In other words even though the charger may say charged they need life and a history of discharging and charging to have any depth of charge. I can also tell you that if theyever get fully or practically fully discharge (below 50%) we throw them out rather than sell them as a new product. I think full discharge on a new battery does some serious life deterioration even though they recover fairly well.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | I have a couple of large Caterpillar brand batteries that were purchased by a movie studio for running their flood lights when the generators go silent during filming. They tossed them after the shoot and I acquired some of them. I am running one in my '56 Plymouth. When the generator died I didn't notice it was a problem for a couple weeks! I started and ran that battery during my entire Malibu cruise and 3-4 other runs with a dead generator. This battery seems to have an outstanding amount of storage capacity.
