Location: The Mile High City | Did anyone go to the Amelia Island show and see this Adventurer convertible? There is a blurb about it in NDC Adventures too. The article said Tom White restored it and a fellow from Newfoundland owns it now, although the card says New Jersey. I don't think I have ever seen an image of it before. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | It's been around for a while now. This car is the only one in existence with fully functional factory EFI. The restorer, Tom White, apparnetly re-engineered an EFI unit that had been found in an attic somewhere, so that it would actually work correctly. There is a complete thread on this site here http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=19270 Edited by imopar380 2016-05-10 12:03 AM (58 Desoto2 Fuelie brain.jpg) (58 DeSoto3 Fuelie.jpg) (58 DeSoto4 Fuelie.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 58 Desoto2 Fuelie brain.jpg (72KB - 158 downloads) 58 DeSoto3 Fuelie.jpg (71KB - 156 downloads) 58 DeSoto4 Fuelie.jpg (119KB - 165 downloads)

Here are pics of the full resto on their Facebook page . They do an amazing job and they also did the Fuel Injected car , but tom said they owned this car for years before they restored it and sold it to a customer they restored a 56 Pace car for if I remember the story right . Either way amazing job they do . Only 5 Of these cars left now worldwide , 3 of them still in the US and the other 2 in Sweden . But a Desoto in the 70s would have been nothing to most , and I bet a few became 300s also ! I am just waiting for someone to die one day who has a nest of these cars no one knows about . One can dream anyway ! There has to be a few more somewhere !

Today I went to Torbjorn Fredricksson's website and he had images of the car too - but it looked like most of them were images taken at Amelia Island. You have actually seen the car in person, please tell us more!

Veteran Posts: 118 Location: Nawth Kerolinuh | I talked to Tom several years ago at a show - he mentioned the second Adventurer convertible and said he would get to it someday. Glad it's finally out so people can see it. Whether you agree with the level of restoration or not, it's hard to argue with the work they do at Whitehall. Stunning - with every detail correct. Tom is a wealth of knowledge on these cars and it shows in the cars they turn out. I've seen several of their restorations and they do some of the best FL cars in the world.

Location: Parts Unknown | The Adventurer - 2016-05-12 5:21 AM Do you have any pics of them Doc ? ================================ Most cars were confirmed via the NDC (which I was very active with at the time), through magazine articles (Swedish), or persons with cars directing me to others they knew of. I have a few hard photos, but this was all done long before I had a computer. Of 82 built, 10% or more survive. A small number, given the starting number, but high, given the typical percentage. Fireflites survive more on a 1% level.

Expert Posts: 2003 Location: Branson, MO | I hate to be nit-picky over such a beautiful automobile and it just may be my imagination, but the front bumper looks like it is turned up in the front not allowing the side to be more parallel with the ground. This may be normal for the '58s - I'm not sure, but there is a difference with the one shown in the picture below. The '57-58 cars look like this because the top portion of the bumper that wraps around the fender is tapered instead of following the fender line above it.

Location: Parts Unknown | Viper ~ You are correct, the F/I car has a more correctly aligned bumper. The Amelia Island car could use a loosening of the rear frame bolts and a slight raising of the back of the bumper. I can't say I am crazy about the gold paint. I guess it was a part of the "prestige" image that was presented in the Adventurer "package", but I find it uninspiring, like the rather sedate mandatory interior you got with this model. I really find the "dart" triangle of silver anodized aluminum to clash with the overall smooth lines of the car. It was this feature and the bland interior that ultimately soured me on my Adventurer and I opted to go for the Fireflite instead. Awesome car, no debate. But I am not of the station in life where I can have a stable of all my favorite cars, and thusly, I am forced to pick a favorite, and for me, the Fireflite has more going for it in terms of late 50's "panache" than the Adventurer, so that it where I took it.

Location: The Mile High City | I have been thinking about this car. So what do you fellows think the value of the car is? The last one sold at Barrett Jackson as part of a trio (white with gold sweep) for $264,000 (I guess that includes the commission) Tom White's EFI car sold for a bunch of cash and then again at a fraction (don't know what either price was) Dan talked to Tom and Tom said he owned the car for some 25 years then restored it for the new owner. The new owner must have paid a pretty penny to wrest it from Tom and have it restored - or Tom owed the guy a huge favor!

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | Boy that's a tough one Mike. How do you value one based on comps when there are so few, and all it takes is an auction where Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos both decide that they MUST have it? My guess is that, in a normal sale situation, if such a thing exists with a car like this, one restored to Tom W's standard has to be worth 1/4 mil. at least. One might never be for sale again in my lifetime. To some, including me, a '58 DeS convert is more desirable than a 300D, but not everyone thinks that way.

My car was a factory dual exhaust and is low mileage and was still running through there till i got the car and my tail lights were the worst rotted ones I have seen , completely eaten away beyond repair and were a bin job .

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I personally think this car being Restored by Tom White is worth more like $350-$395K . It may not even make that at Auction , but to a private buyer who wants the best of something not available that's what it would take if it were my car . As I still think these cars aren't appreciated for their low production and wild looks . Hell its rarer than most Ferraris and they sell for Millions ! Here are Tom whites words about the buyer of the Adventurer "We purchased it about 20 years ago and only recently sold it to the person with the 1956 Indy Pace Car we restored in Canada " Edited by The Adventurer 2016-05-25 7:37 PM

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Mark my words, these wild cars are going to go up in value big time. I knew it when I bought my first 60 DeSoto 4 door hardtop Fireflite back in 1983. Actually it was given to my twin brother and me from my Dad. Someone left it at the Storage units that he owns. It was our shared car. We got it running, which wasn't too hard and we even got it painted. We were styling ! Literally. Then the lame e-brake didn't hold on a slight hill and it rolled back and hit a pole, denting the fin on the side. Dammit !!!!! Live and learn. We sold the car a few years later to an older man that had a few cars he would lease to the movies (from what I understand). He finally sold it just about a year ago and it went over to Finland or Sweden I think. Maybe someone on here bought it. Here is a couple pictures of it as it was leaving Utah. DeSoto lives !!! Expert Posts: 2996 Location: Sept. 1958 | The owner had the 56 Desoto Pace Car at Hershey this past year. In the past shows, I recall seeing a 57 Dodge Convertible, 59 Dodge Convertible and 56 Lincoln Convertible owned by him, I believe that was in 2007. The Desoto Pace Car was a typical Whitehall restoration, perfect. Tom had registered a 58 Desoto last year but it didn't show, so I'm assuming it was and is this car. So figure on this car being at this year AACA meet in October.

Location: The Mile High City | firedome - 2016-05-25 3:01 PM Boy that's a tough one Mike. yeah, "value" and "worth" - there might be a distinction! If you were completely dispassionate, this car can't be valued at more than $40,000 - heck, you can get a much faster, safer, and more reliable, comfortable, and economical new convertible in your choice of colors for that (and $40,000 is not chump change, by any means). But this particular car, being exactly what it is, might be worth 10 times that!
