Veteran Posts: 109 | Hi All, I read a few threads and I'm trying to figure out how you guys comes up with the numbering system. I can't make those numbers out because of all the paint on the tag but the lower numbers are visable. Here's what I have
35 1 5 Schedule BDY PNT TRM A1126 10035 331 3ZUZ 123
Block number L325-66573
With all that being said, what does ths tell me?
Thanks, Sam
And here's a picture of the tag once I got the 3+ layers of paint off

Location: The Mile High City | Hi, Sam: I don't have it all figured out, but it depends on where those upper numbers are located on the data plate. There are basically 27 positions on the upper part of the data plate. This looks like a Detroit data plate. A 3 in the number one position indicates a Torqueflite Automatic three speed transmission A 5 in the number two position indicates Air Temp air conditioning For the other numbers we would have to see exactly what position they are in. You can indicate those by reading the top two numbers (down) above the stamped number, for example, a 501 indicates undercoating. I have only seen As and Bs as the first letter in the lower section. I don't know what they mean. Your car was built approximately November 26, 1957 (1126) It is a Dodge Coronet V-8 Club Coupe (331) The paint color is Deluxe Two Tone Gold roof, Sunshine Yellow lower, Gold fins and deck 3ZUZ The interior is Coronet deluxe black and white

Veteran Posts: 109 | Thanks Mike! It is a Detroit car, I figured that out with the vin number. It's a push button 3 speed so that sounds right but there's no provisioning for A/C that I can see. I's a V8 poly that was converted to a hemi. Interior is black and white, the color is off white and gold but it's a repaint. I don't know what sunshine yellow looks like so I'll search that out I'm going to strip the paint off and hopefully get a better idea of the numbers.

Location: The Mile High City | Sam, I will probably never completely figure out the coding! I have a long ways to go as it is. I would love to see pictures of your car - sounds cool. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=41650&posts=24&highlight=58 dodge template&highlightmode=1#M462386

Veteran Posts: 109 | Hi Mike, These colors look closer to the color of my car. I lookud up sunshine yellow on google and the colors that came up were a blinding yellow! Not a bad color but mix it with gold and it's just strange. My car looks like a cream and gold which is nice. The picture below is the day I got it a couple months ago. The day was overcast so it's a little muted. Thanks, Sam

Location: The Mile High City | Hi, Sam: So there are good folks on here (Christine-lover, LD3 Greg, d500neil, among many others) that know a lot more about this stuff than I do, but I think that 3 in the first position is the Torqueflite 5 in the second position indicates air conditioning, which should automatically include Solex glass for all windows 1 in the 22nd position indicated undercoating 5 in the 27th position is a delivery code and indicates the car was delivered from the factory by truck It seems very unusual to me that the car has air conditioning, but no other option groups like even a radio! It seems like a very frugal person from an extremely hot environment ordered the car. Here is a recent image of another sunshine and gold car (Sunshine and Gold Coronet Club Coupe photo.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Sunshine and Gold Coronet Club Coupe photo.jpg (239KB - 310 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 109 | Hi Mike,
Thanks again. The car is fairly stripped but here's what it does have in options, V8, automatic, power steering and a 1 speaker radio, that's about it.

Location: The Mile High City | I looks like you have the basic Coronet interior. I was mistaken about the deluxe Coronet interior code!

Veteran Posts: 109 | Yeah I would say my interior is basic, but still cool in my opinion

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | Hi Mike and Sam. I think you will find that 5 in the second space means heater and defroster. Coded separately likely because heater, normally included in accessory groups 1 or 2, were not ordered on this car. My notes indicate that 3 in the second space is front A/C. Greg

Location: The Mile High City | Thanks, Greg! I will revise my notes. That did not make much sense to me on this car! With that correction, the car should NOT be equipped with Solex glass - crystal clear all the way around!

Veteran Posts: 109 | Thanks again guys So how does one learn this knowledge of decoding the tag? Is there a website that might help?

Location: The Mile High City | These (see attachment) are the notes I have, in Microsoft Excel format for 1958 Dodge Detroit cowl plates. These don't apply to other years, makes, or even codes from the Windsor, Los Angeles, or Delaware production plants! As noted above, I have very incomplete knowledge of these - so please look at this as a work in progress. It is not definitive and I guarantee that there are mistakes included! However, I hope that our wide body of group knowledge can correct the mistakes and fill in blanks and gaps. Veteran Posts: 109 | Awesome Serge, thanks! I never took an after pictures for you guys but I did a little more cleaning, hit it with a good primer and some off white paint and it turned out pretty good . When I get the car repainted down the road I'll make sure it gets the proper color applied
