Member Posts: 14 | I own a 1960 Desoto Adventurer two door, auto trans, that has a 413 w/ 2 four barrel carbs. The block number is 1960, all appears to be correct, the carbs had been replaced but the air cleaners are true to what I see in the books (gold ovals). My first thought was someone had replaced the top end of a 383 but further inspection shows this (I believe) to be a true 413 w/ 2 X 4. It does have dual exhaust. The info from the Chrysler Historical was not much help. I do own a true 1960 Desoto, all the codes & serial # are right but no engine data was included. BTW sold in region 41 (Cinn. Ohio), delivered new in Mooresville, IN, Tom Baker Motors. #7203108591 7 DeSoto 2 Adventurer 0 1960 3 Jefferson Assy Detroit # 108591 (no explanation) Body: 722 2 door hardtop Color: WW1 White Trim: 806 (no explanation) Options 1 Solex Glass 4 no explanation 42 Rayon white tires, 8.00 X 14 1 axle code, no explanation 8 undercoating, hood pad 6 accessory code, no explanation Could this have come from the factory w/ a 413 & 2 X 4's?? Since the block # is 1960 seems an odd/long shot circumstance that a person replaced the motor with a date correct engine. The motor looks like what came in the New Yorker & Imperial, not the 300. No cross ram. Gold valve covers, Golden Lion sticker. It does not make a whole hill of beans, the motor is great and the car is awesome, but I am curious. Could a customer have ordered this set up? Any thoughts? | ||

There would be some data on a very special De Soto with a 413 Engine because this was not mentioned in any literature. .. Once the car was at The Dealer-Ship, then a 413 Engine could of been switched; ... It has been several years since 1960 and a correct stamped Chrysler Division 413 Engine could have been sourced to replace a 383 De Soto Engine. ------------- The clue if the engine was first used in any other division is to look at The Stamped Engine Pad ( there was never a 413 placed in any normally sold 1959 - 1960 or 1961 De Soto ). Part of MoPar's "mud" is before 1957 The Senior Corporate Levels all knew The De Soto Division was going to be gone. Thus a 1960 De Soto shared the same "P" Stamp as The Other Senior Divisions. Location: Under the X in Texas | When you say "the block number is 1960" I'm not certain what you mean.. I sold a 1960 Chrysler a year ago with its original engine Stamped "41" and "P". There was no "1960" anywhere. | ||

Expert Posts: 2289 Location: Eastern Iowa | Wayne is correct on the 41 and the P, at least the 300F blocks were marked that way, P 41HP. If it were indeed a 2/4 block originally, I believe it would have been stamped that way. But if it were a replacement block, it may have had NO stampings whatsoever. I once owned a 300J w/a replacement block and it had no markings. | ||

Member Posts: 14 | Thanks for the help. The block # fit in the range of 1960 block #'s, that is how I came to the conclusion it was a 1960 motor. That file is at the office, I will post Monday and show you what I am talking about. The answer about Desoto being on the way out is most interesting. Sounds as if weird things might have happened. | ||

That might give some more leads to the #4 and 6 | ||

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The 413 V8 was available only on 1960 Chrysler New Yorker, Chrysler 300-F and all Imperial models. You say the engine has gold valve covers with Golden Lion stickers. That is for a Chrysler engine, not DeSoto. So I suspect the engine came from a Chrysler and put in your DeSoto sometime after it was built. To my knowledge, there are no numeric sequences that identify the model year for Chrysler engines. All 1960 Plymouth, Dodge Dart, Dodge, DeSoto, Chrysler and Imperial engines, save the 318 V8, have engine numbers beginning with P for the 1960 model year followed by the engine size - 22 - 225cid RG block slant six 61 - 361cid B block V8 38 - 383cid B block V8 R-38 - 383cid RB block V8 (Chrysler only) 41 - 413cid RB block V8 (Chrysler and Imperial only) This was followed by a digit for the month the engine was assembled and a second digit for the day. No numeric sequences. The 1960 318cid V8 used prefix P-318 and was followed a sequential number that started at 1001. Your interior code of 806 is for black and red. | ||

Member Posts: 14 | Excellent information from everyone. Thanks so much. Of course its a Chrysler engine if it is a Golden Lion, that thought never crossed my mind. I drove all day yesterday, lots of thumbs up and two people stopped to take photos. Its a really striking design. I love all the fin cars but 1960 seems to be a very good year. I will get some help and post some pics, I'm not very tech oriented. Thanks again. | ||
