Ian,

This is the first that I had heard of a tinted clear steering wheel. Do you know if this was a higher cost option above the clear wheel?

Thanks

Ray,

There were two 'tinted' versions of the wheel in 61. The green version was only available with the green interior and the tan version was only available with the brown interior. The other color interiors received the clear version. There was no extra cost - at least on my 61 NYer window sticker.

That stripped Newport was advertised this way "step up to a Chrysler for only $2964.00"
I'd rather have a loaded Plymouth than a stripped Chrysler!

This car appears to have a grille shell from a '62 with the grill insert from a '61. Not that it matters.

It's shame it's so rusty. Cars like this are a tough sell. Most likely it will end up a parts car.

Yes Ian, the stripped Chrysler was not good, and a loaded one was more expensive than a New Yorker!!. Good point Greg it is a 62 grille.

Did '61 have CHRYSLER letters and '62 did not?

Never quite figured this out.

I'm not sure Ian typed what he meant to say but 1961 Chryslers DID have lettering on the grill surround.

Yes, It was a typo error. I edited the post to read 62 instead of 61.

imopar380 - 2015-05-20 9:12 PM Correct, no letters on the 62 grille surround.

Does this (Chrysler letters on '61 grill surround) hold true for all ithe Chrysler models in 1961- including Canadian?

Thanks

Looking through my pictures, I have Canadian built 61 Chryslers both with and without the lettering on the grille frame. Perhaps it was a late year trim change on the 61 models.....

First of all, were there Canadian-built 1961 Chryslers? I was thinking they all came from Jefferson Assembly.

I have seen non-Chrysler scripted grille frames on '61s before - not saying they are original. I own/have owned at least ten 1961 Chryslers, and a 1962 or two. My driver 300-G coupe had a non-Chrysler script grille frame on it when I bought it in 1987. It is a rather early car (10/31/60), no evidence of collision damage in front, so I have no explanation. Also, it was not in any 300 collectors hands before I bought it.

My observations are that the '61 grille frames pit more than the '62s. The '61s also seem to get the run-off marks below where the fenders meet the hood, while the 62s do not.

So, my theory is the '62 grille frames were a popular replacement for '61s because the '61s deteriorated and for whatever reason the 62s held up better. And that the Chrysler-lettered frame is correct for '61.

Speaking of steering wheels, here's a deluxe steering wheel for sale that is green with clear instead of green tint. Well, the clear portion is pretty yellowed, but it looks like it's in good shape overall. The price seems reasonable. These don't come up for sale very often with cracks.
