Member Posts: 41 Location: South Central PA | Hello all, I have a question about a possible replacement for my starter on my 60 Windsor. Had the starter rebuilt this winter but today it seemed to struggle cranking over the motor when it was hot (battery checks out fine). Are there high torque replacements out there that would be a good fit or would it be better to get it back to the starter guy to have him try to tweak it? Thanks.

It's supposed to help to run the neg. cable to the starter bolt to shorten up the circuit a bit. Edited by Mopar1 2014-10-26 5:29 PM

I know you said that it checks out fine, but it could be on the verge of going bad. It's an easy test to swap out the battery and see if you still have the issue. If you had the starter rebuilt less than a year ago and that turns out to be the cause of your problem, then your rebuilder is on the hook to repair it. No need to install replacement/high torque starters. Just throwing money away. Ron

Member Posts: 41 Location: South Central PA | Battery was replaced in July with a group 24 interstate. Load testing shows 10+vdc. Starts fine cold, had it out today and it was very sluggish after sitting for about 10 mins (cranks until it hits a compression then lags hard). The negative was replaced and goes to the front of the block, maybe I will run another down to the starter lug and see what happens. When I had the starter gone over in the spring they replaced the solenoid and the bushings, said everything else checked out. I rebuilt the engine in the winter, it has about 500 miles on it now, timing is set to 15* (mopar electronic ignition). Wasn't sure if the starter didn't have enough snuff to crank over that much compression.

Expert Posts: 3035 Location: N.W. Fla. | Had problems with an O/T S/W, turned out corrosion had worked its way up the cable under the insulation. Was causing problems for me, never would have suspected, a buddy peeled back the insulation & wow was it green under there!

Member Posts: 41 Location: South Central PA | The only piece I didn't replace on it was the lead from the relay to the starter. It's on my list to do this winter, that could very well be the culprit... Does anyone know who reproduces a lead from the relay down to the starter/solenoid?

Expert Posts: 3035 Location: N.W. Fla. | Shep - 2014-10-26 9:36 PM Could be, but...a guy with a '67 Plym on the Power Tour this year was having all sorts of electrical problems. We checked out his positive cable & it had a lot of corrosion under the plastic. He wasn't from near the ocean, & he also had other problems.Mopar1 - 2014-10-26 8:49 PM It must have been that Gulf salt air. Expert Posts: 3035 Location: N.W. Fla. | 60 Windsor - 2014-10-26 9:40 PM I use generic where mine's a driver. You'd be better off running the cable to the starter & another cable up to the relay, unless you're in concours class..The only piece I didn't replace on it was the lead from the relay to the starter. Member Posts: 41 Location: South Central PA | Thanks for the help, it's a driver, not a show car. I will look into making my wires for it this winter, the plan anyway is to build a new wiring harness and get rid of the 55 year old wires.

Expert Posts: 2244 Location: Yorba Linda, Ca | Hi Torque starters are dasy to find for your engine. I recalls when I was kid, maybe 20, A friend of mine bought a 60 Chrysler Saratoga. He was very proud of it. 383 engine with a 4 barrel as I recall. We cruised to Bob's Big Boy. Then decided to leave. Well car would not start as it turned over sooooo slowly. Waited for half an hour and she cranked right up. This was a very common problem and is the reason why Chrysler went to the "Geared Starters. You can live with the old starters, by putting in as big a battery that will fit, and using the best and thickest battery cables you can find, (6 volt cables even better, thicker). All my cars, 64 Dodge, 426, 59 Dodge 440 have the hi torque starters and crank vigoursly, hot or cold. The 58 Chrysler , 392 Hemi, still has its original stqrter, but I have a Huge battery in it, and no problems unless She's really warm, (but since then I had the radiator redone and no problems this Summer.
