Member Posts: 43 | Does anyone know where there is a reasonably priced v8 manual three speed. Or better yet a 383 b motor and manual three speed. Wouldn't mind finding a pont-a-mousson (facel vega/chrysler 300) 4 speed either. I am building up a car and looking to get the period correct drivetrain for it so as to keep most things on it original. It seems the few 1960 3 speeds I have found are the light duty syncroshift models for the inline six cylinder cars. The small block v8 cars had a decent one and the 361, 383 cars had a heavy duty one, which would be preferred. Any help would be much appreciated.

Member Posts: 43 | The one listed on ebay is for a 6 cyl car. I thought about rebuilding it, however the 6cyl and 8 cyl ones are quite different both inside and out. I am trying to get one as well that has the parking brake on it so I don't have to upgrade the brakes.

Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | I owned at one time a 60 Plymouth Belvedere 2 dr. with the 361 and factory 3 speed. It used the BW T-85 which is a strong trans. and the only one to be used behind a big block. Unfortunately, it was only used in 59-60 and then in 62-64 behind the max-wedge engines so it is hard to find today.

Expert Posts: 1290 | 58 -- Was the '60 3-speed manual the same as the '61? If so, I do know the Ramchargers had fits with the one in their '61 Dart Pioneer S/S at the '61 NHRA Nationals as it would bend or even shear synchronizer pins after just a couple of runs. Back in 1960-1964, I had a buddy who also had a manual 361 Belvedere, but until he got a Hurst floor-mounted shifter, he had the devil's own time with the column mounted "3-on-the-tree." Expert Posts: 1748 Location: Alaska | The BW T-85 is different from the 61 Mopar trans. It uses a 9 bolt side cover, curved on the bottom. The main case actually looks the same as a BW T-10 4 speed and was the basis for that trans. It was used in a lot of other vehicles in the 50s and 60s, mostly Ferds and IIRC some GMs and pickups but with different input shafts and gear ratios. There is even an overdrive version used mostly in Ferds.

Member Posts: 43 | Hey oldwood. Are you offering the whole car, or just the column and trans set up. Out of curiosity what v8 is in it. would you mind putting up a few pictures? 58Coupe, you seem to know these transmissions pretty well. I have a book that shows, the three trans that were used specificly in 1960 and what your saying makes sense. I have also comes across a A745 (pretty sure) it was on a big block any idea of gearing, dependability, and durability?

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Hey, Dorsey & Mac; do you (or anyone else, around here) have any gear ratio specifications on your two trannies? The 1960 3-speed should be fairly well built....compared to the 57-ish transmissions. Curious about their ratios, and whether the '60 318 was less strong than the 361/383/413(!) iterations.
