Expert Posts: 3967 Location: DFW, TX | You guys should also type the dealership name in your posts. That way, you (or anyone else) can Google search the dealership and see the image you've posted. My 1957 Plymouth 2dr Suburban was delivered to Billingsley Motors in Portland OR. My 1957 Chrysler New Yorker coupe was delivered to Reinauer Bros Motor Co. in Oklahoma City OK. Neither car had a dealer tag of any kind on it. If anyone has a car sold at Vandergriff or Emil Vandergriff motors, those are my people! Vandergriff Chevrolet is and was a big name in the Arlington area. Emil Vandergriff Motors is less well known, probably because they dealt in Studebakers, Packards, and Nashes.

Location: Parts Unknown | Much like the word "Deer", I believe the plural form of "Nash" is still "Nash". Unless, of course, it is like Goose/Geese, Tooth/Teeth, Booth/Beeth ? Noosh ? I guess another alternative would be "Nashi", as the plural of Fungus is Fungi. I've always seen a similarity between fungi and Nash design.

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Gerry Scram provided this: Dad sold cars for his brother, this nameplate was used from 55-58. Because may dad sold cars I was fortunate enough to ride in new 57 Dodge convets gold & white with signal seeking radio. See a new white & maroon 57 Desoto FireFlite. We rode to school in a 57 D500 with Hi Way Hi Fi record player listening to Johnny Horton's ballads. I remember new 56 D500s one passed down to a customer's son for drag racing with lots of trophys on the hood. Dad & his brother were in their 40's so they were younger thinking autos they sold that, & being blessed by a sleepy Ford dealer. Of course there were new & amazing models new Sweptwing Dodges & Suddenly it's 1960 Plmouths, as well as pretty 56 3 tones. The guys stocked spring color 58s, a Regal Lancer & Silver Special Plym, 56 Golden Rod D500, 57 new body Power Wagon & Sweptside finned pickups. My cousin , a little older than me got to drive a 58 dark blue Belv convert one summer how cool. (Schram.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Schram.jpg (30KB - 449 downloads)

Regular Posts: 89 | Some things to watch out for in Chrysler Corp. dealer names in the 1950's. My 58 Imperial was sold originally at Haggarty Motors in Great Falls, Montana. The Chrysler Historic IBM card shows Great Falls Motors. These are the same business. The "incorporated" name of the dealer was Great Falls, and that is what Chrysler will show on their records. The "DBA" (Doing Business As) name was Haggarty. Sometimes, the Monroney Label (post 58 cars) will show both the legal and DBA names. Also, in some parts of the country, distributors still were the "main" dealers, and were the sale of record for Chrysler. These are typically a big city dealer, who established "sub" dealers in their territory. So, don't toss that name plate without some research if it does not match the Chrysler Historical IBM card. In any event, I can see the "ghost" of the original dealer nameplate on my Imperial, but it disappeared over the years. Rats! Mark

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Distributors had a contract with Chrysler (or whatever manufacturer it may be) to recruit and maintain dealers in a set geological area. Manitoba and North-West Ontario was one of the areas in Canada, for example. The idea came about in the early days of the auto industry. The distributors used their money to build up a dealer network as well as build a warehouse and stock parts for the dealers. Some well known distributors were Waters for Plymouth-DeSoto in San Francisco, Earl Anthony for Packard in California and Dominion Motors for Ford in Western Canada. Grew up in Manitoba where Breen Motors was the Dodge-DeSoto distributor and Breen Bros. the Plymouth-Chrysler distributor. The dealers recruited by the distributor dealt with the distributor for parts and ordering cars as their contracts were with the distributor and not the manufacturer. Thus distributors ordered the cars for the dealers and the distributors names appeared on Chrysler Corporation build records. One big drawback - manufacturers could, and did, raid competitors distributors. Ford raided its competitors in the 1950s when recruiting dealers for the upcoming Edsel, which is how many Packard dealers landed up selling Edsels. Ford was able to get a few Packard distributors to switch to Ford, and thus the distributor and all their dealers dropped Packard for Edsel. The last real Packards came off the line in June, 1956, and the new ones were Studebakers spiffed up to look like Packards. Many dealers had lost customers along with the disappearance of the real Packard and selling Ford Motor Companys new Edsel sounded like a good idea. Chrysler eased out of the distributor set up in the 1950s and 1960s. And that was also the reason Chrysler built parts warehouses across the United States and Canada - to replace the parts warehouses run by the distributors.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 341 Location: Wisconsin | Here are a few. My dad's car (1956 Fireflite) is originally from Stephen's Motors, Phoenix, AZ. This summer, we also saw a white/pink '56 Firedome from the same dealer at the WPC/DeSoto Club meet. The tag on the red car is from the 1958 Firesweep convertible that was also at the meet. I believe if I remember correctly the tag is not original to the car. The Pink '55 has a tag and plate frame from ABC Motors, Minneapolis, MN. I have had a lot of people ask me to put the company name on our alternators, and I don’t understand it and will not do it. I don’t like going to car shows and seeing a very nice engine compartment lessened by a huge p.o.s.master sticker on the alternator.

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | I understand completely how you feel RushPS - that's how i'd feel buying a new car. When the car is a 60 year old survivor the dealer emblem takes on a whole different aspect, it's become part of the history of the car. In the same way I would not add one to my car if it didn't have one, I'd think twice about taking it off if one was on it. Same with license plate frames. When I buy a new car it's the first thing I take off. But on my classics they are part of the cars history and I think they are fine.

Location: Parts Unknown | I judge that more on the obnoxious factor. A discreet tag showing who rebuilt the generator of the dealer tag is perfectly fine and tells the history without being a #@! hot pink billboard that distracts from the vehicle. I LOVE old chrome dealer tags as part of that old school "scene" that died out after the 50's, so it is just an added bonus. The stuff that gives me tunabutt is the generic license plate surrounds or window stickers/headers that say "CHEVELLE" or one of the contrived quips about Fords eating Chevys, or the Bowtie. Really ? I could never figure out that common-as-a-bellybutton car was a CHEVELLE ! Thanks for pandering to the idiots of the world. As a funny twist on this, my brother likes to play stupid with people when they see his 61 Polara. What kind of car is it ? I don't know. I think it's a Vermillion, but I'm not sure. I was hoping you could tell me !

Ryan - Green Bay House of Ryan was a well known Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealer in Green Bay; I knew it well having lived in the area for some years back in the 1970s. Apparently it has closed now though whether from being bought up by one of the mega-dealers or just simply closing I do not know. There is a new name associated with the dealership location and that is Gandrud. It still sells DOdges, Chrylers, and Jeeps though. Edited by 58 DESOTOS RULE 2014-03-28 2:47 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | Nothing under it but rust Neil and it is pinned, the black plate part is pressed aluminium with 1/4" alloy bolts spot welded (?) to the back to hold it on and the "V8" bit is cast with 3 pins on it, held to the plate with those horrible internal star washer things. The holes in the trunk frame matched the size and general look of how the factory ones were done, but really, I have no idea where it came from or when it was fitted. I have not seen another

This may not be the dealer that sold your car, as there are a few complications that occasionally pop up, such as trades, regional distributor dealerships passing cars on to smaller satellite dealers, etc., but most times it is pretty accurate.
